What a fantastic week in 1st grade! Everyone came back from break rested and ready! We started the week right off with our Valentine’s Day Party. We had a lot of fun stacking candy hearts to see how high a tower we could make. There were some pretty high towers, but I think Calla was the winner in the end! We then had a yummy snack and watched a fun Valentine movie. The class loved “mailing” their valentine cards to friends! The 100th day finally came on Wednesday. We had already started our 100’s posters in centers this week so we were ready. We pretended that we found 100 dollars while walking one day and write what we would do with the money. There was quite a range of responses, from “I will buy Toys R Us” to I will use the money to “buy a pool” . WOW 1st grade money goes FAR!!! In Math we did a quick review of chapter 7, making numbers 11-19, before completing the chapter 7 check point. We have started chapter 8 on Thursday but will take a break this week to complete the district mid-year math assessment. The math homework this week will just be review until we get back to chapter 8, counting with groups of ten. In reading and writing we are fully into our informational unit. We have been exploring non-fiction text features as well as how to write a teaching book. The children have really taken off with their writing this week! They are writing such amazing books. It is so exciting to watch them try something new each day to develop their writing. We will be celebrating Dr.Seuss this week with many activities and reading opportunities. If you would like to send in your child’s favorite Dr. Seuss book, that would be great! Please make sure their name is in it! In Science, we made thermometers with our 4th grade buddies. The class enjoyed practicing showing the temperature. We will use these thermometers this week as we talk about different temperatures and what they mean. We also gave Mrs. Kourt a book for her baby who is due this week!!! Looking to the future…. We will be holding an “Eating of the Greens” class celebration on March 17th from 10:45 until 11:30. Parents are welcome to attend. We will be having a buffet brunch together in the classroom. I will be contacting you very soon with some green food requests! If you can think of something fun and original feel free to e-mail me! This will be a great opportunity for us to gather and celebrate together! Thank you to Kaan's Dad for being a great guest reader! We really enjoyed learning a lot about Turkey! I hope you had an enjoyable weekend! Below are some pictures from the week for you to enjoy! Great Job to Isao for completing all 100 Priority Words this week! WOOHOO!
