Moving forward in MAY

We are continuing to work hard in May here in First grade. Our opinion writing is in full swing (see letter below). We are building our skills toward our final project of writing book reviews! What an awesome way to end the school year. Our butterfly unit is just taking off. We should have a shipment any day now! We are moving right along in math as well. Regrouping for addition and subtraction can be a difficult concept, but we are practicing everyday! Please make sure to continue to practice math facts with your child at home. Please enjoy some of the pictures from our visiting meteorologist Mr. Gough! We had a great time learning about forecasting weather! Thank you so much for the beautiful flowers and notes last week! It is so wonderful to be appreciated! Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Well, we are finally having some spring weather and we are loving it here in first grade! The class is so excited to be back on the playground and running around! We have finished up our Informational books and they are amazing! I am so proud of how far everyone has come with their writing! We had our fourth grade buddies help us edit and revise (see pictures below). In math, we have finished up chapter 9 and will move onto adding with tens and ones! We have been practicing our math facts during centers this week too. Please keep up the practice at home! In reading we have been making amazing progress. We will continue with informational reading as we move into our butterfly unit in science. Many student are really getting into some of the series books we have in the classroom. In small groups we are beginning to have book discussions around an element of the story! These first graders amaze me every day! We had a visitor last week that was a big surprise for the class. Mrs. Valentini came in and read some great books! The class was so happy to hear about her adventures and update her on what has been going on in first grade! We filled our coin jar last week and we celebrated with a popcorn and movie party. We watched Mouse on the Motorcycle. We had just finished the book as our read-aloud. What a great movie. We discussed how there were a few things different between the book and the movie. It is interesting how our images of the book were similar and the movie was different! We will begin another Ralph read-aloud this week! Our new interactive projector is now up and running! We have been exploring all the great things we can do with it. It is extremely helpful for math and writing lessons! I hope to use it even more in the coming weeks! Looking forward we will be moving into opinion writing during the next few weeks. There will be a few homework assignments to help us get started with the new unit. Please watch for them in the folder! As you may have noticed we have slowed the amount "please see me rewards". I have been awarding them on Fridays when we get all of our Friday papers together. You no longer have to send work back in! Also the back side of the math is a challenge page. I have encouraged everyone to try-it! I hope everyone had a wonderful vacation!
